The most significant benefit of WIL is the way in which it contributes to students’ learning and experiences in a professional environment specific to their field (Trede, F., 2012). In most cases, university students undertake WIL programs in their final years of undergraduate education, to ensure their liability in the workplace and that they are able to understand and process information within their work environment. Students who participate in WIL programs have shown to have greater employability compared to candidates with less practical experience, which gives these students a large advantage (Papakonstantinou, T. et al, 2013). Studies have shown that many individuals who perform well in their work placement are offered internships or employment by their work placement supervisors, which further highlights this advantage in comparison to less experienced candidates (Trede, F., 2012 and Papakonstantinou, T. et al, 2013). WIL students can also use these opportunities for employer-relations to determine which career path they would like to pursue, and to compile and compare their own personal experiences from differing workplaces to contribute to their professional decision-making (Trede, F., 2012). These experiences also teach individuals self-management skills which they may use throughout their careers, and also later in life (Jackson, D., 2017). Thus, WIL programs provide many professional benefits to undergraduate students, particularly those joining a workforce related to their degree.
